October is Window Covering Safety Month. Sheila's Window Toppers would like to help educate parents and pet owners about the importance of cordless window coverings and options available that promote safety.

Many styles of standard corded window coverings pose a tempting hazard to infants and pets who view dangling cards as playthings. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, at least one child dies from window cord strangulation every month, while other children suffer from near strangulation. Standard cords are a serious danger that cause injury to small children and pets.  People need to understand that there are other options when purchasing window coverings.

In this effort Sheila’s Window Toppers is providing a free cordless upgrade option on certain blinds and shades for the month of October. If a parent or pet owner would like to ensure safety in their homes, now is the time to upgrade your window coverings.

For those looking to purchase new blinds and make their home safer, Sheila’s Window Toppers is offering free cordless upgrades on select blind products. These cordless blinds and shades are easy to lift by simply pushing the shade up from the bottom rail. Cordless shades offer an elegant look and eliminate dangerous long dangling cords. You can learn more about these Blinds by visiting our Crowfoot Showroom and asking about the free promotion.

Window Covering Safety Month gives us the opportunity to join with others in our industry, like the Window Covering Safety Council, to promote window covering safety.

The Platinum™ App

 Rethink remote control.

Tap into the Power of the Platinum™ App.

Several shades smarter

From first light to movie night: continuous, creative control can now rests in your hands. Far more than a remote, the smart technology of the PlatinumApp enables you to preset and reset the precise position of multiple window coverings for optimal privacy, security, energy management and mood. Moreover, customized slider bars for each Platinum App Certified window covering make programming slide-to-set simple.

+ Scene control. Room control. Individual shade control. Timed Control.
+ Single-touch perfection.
+ Total control. That’s why it’s several shades smarter!

It’s smart technology made simple.

With the new, easy-to-use Platinum™ App, you can operate your PowerRise® 2.1 and PowerGlide® 2.1 motorized window coverings using your iPad®, iPhone® or iPod touch®. More than a dozen HunterDouglas window fashion styles feature the fresh, customized technology, opening new vistas for optimizing the home environment.

This is creative control like never before.

For the first time, customers can design the ambient effect they desire by:

Scene

A simple touch of the “Good Morning” scene could raise the shades in the kitchen and living room, letting in just the right amount of light for a warming wake-up. Tapping “Good Night” might lower all shades in the home for maximum privacy and security.

Room

Use the slider bar to close all the window coverings in the “Master Bedroom” and get a restful night’s sleep.

Time of Day

Like clockwork, individual and group window coverings can be precisely positioned for security, energy efficiency and personal preference. The PlatinumApp’s timer can automatically set and reset the scene, even when the mobile device is not in the home.

The customized slider-bar simplifies set up.

Customers will appreciate the simplicity of setting up the Platinum App. A customized slider control will appear after selecting a specific shade type from the album view. Personalize the way you name your shades and never move the wrong one again!

The Platinum system is comprised of sleek, discreet components.

The Platinum App Bridge is the heart of the system. It stores your programmed data and sends signals to operate window fashions via Platinum Repeaters. Platinum Repeaters simply plug into a wall outlet and extend the range of the signal throughout your home. It’s recommended to have at least one repeater in each room where a motorized window fashion is located.

Silhouette® Window Shadings
Just as sunscreen protects skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays, Silhouette® Window Shadings protect room interiors to increase the lifespan of valuable possessions. Here’s how:

Provide ultraviolet protection. Sheers and vanes combine to provide up to 88% ultraviolet protection with the shading down and the vanes open; and 99% with the vanes closed.

Enhance natural daylighting. Sheers disperse sunlight deep into the room, reducing the need for electric lights to brighten rooms in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Reflect solar heat. Exterior white sheer and vanes reflect the sun’s heat, reducing solar heat gain.

Pantone Color 2014

Each year brings new goals, new movies, new purchases, new families… and new colors. For 2014, Pantone’s color of the year is… Radiant Orchid! It’s a beautiful member of the purple family. With a harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, it brings a bright and unique hue to this year’s trending color palette. Described as “an invitation to innovation,” it is already appearing in styles by Gucci and on Michelle Obama. The color will be greatly integrated into fashion, beauty, and interiors this year. Launching as a Spring color, its ability to mix with chocolate browns and deep greens forecasts its translation into the Fall 2014 color spectrum as well.

                                                                                      Radiant Orchid for Interiors

In the window fashions industry, we are the staples of interior design and ambassadors of home style and innovation. We perfect the art of window dressing through not only inventive lifting systems, but through modern fabrics and colors. It is important to know how to use new color for contemporary clients and creative product lines.
Radiant Orchid is both obvious and adaptable. Uplifting and bold without being overpowering, it reenergizes almost any color scheme and provides a unifying element for diverse spaces. It complements olive and deeper hunter greens, and offers a gorgeous combination when paired with turquoise, teal and even light yellows. Likewise, the vibrant color livens up neutrals including gray, beige and taupe.

While window treatments are an accessory in a room, they are a powerful focus. Shades can be used as the accent color or come in a neutral shade to compliment a brightly painted wall. Each piece in the room, whether it a couch or vase, must coordinate with this palette. Hunter Douglas offers a sophisticated line of window shades that help add class and style to any room. Try Silhouette® window shadings in white against a vivid paint colored wall.

FUN WITH WALLPAPER

Big, Bold & Beautiful Patterns!  Think of wallpaper as a large piece of art and add it to one wall in your space as an accent. This is one of the most popular ways people are using wallpaper now.  Use a bold pattern or color, and it becomes the focus of the room.

As a twist on a traditional wall with molding that creates a paneled effect, just add the wallpaper inside of the panels.

Wallpaper can also be displayed as a piece of art.  With so many beautiful patterns to select from, hang a square of wallpaper on your wall and then frame it with a molding. Wallpaper murals are also available and a popular choice.

Wallpaper isn’t just for walls. Add texture, glimmer and shimmer to your ceiling by applying wallpaper for unexpected twist.

A decor trend that is back in style is textured paper. It offers a fabulous background and it can really cozy up a room. You can purchase organic, natural materials such as grasscloth, some are even available with a shimmer for a more upscale look. Wallpaper with flocking can add interest and give a multidimensional look.

For Color Consultations to select paint or wallpaper call Sheila’s Window Toppers today and speak with a trained Design Consultant. 403-547-4013.

Drop by our Showroom at in Crowfoot Crossing Shopping Centre, Unit 10-250 Crowfoot Cres. N.W. to view our great selection of Blinds, Shutters, Shades and Fabrics and Wallpaper.

SELECTING A FABRIC FOR YOUR DRAPERIES

When  having custom draperies made, the type of fabric you select will determine, not only how your drapes will look, but it will also determine how long they will last.  Most people are more concerned about the look of the fabric, the pattern and the color, rather than what the fabric is made of.  If you understand some of the positives and negatives of the most common drapery fabrics, it will help you make the best selection for your home.

Fabrics come in three basic types, natural, synthetic (man-made) and blends. Natural fabrics tend to be more breathable, while synthetic fabrics tend to be more durable.  Many fabrics are made with a blend of synthetic and natural fibres thus having qualities of both.  Drapes should always be lined and some fabrics need to be interlined to protect the fabric from the sun and extend the life of the fabric.

Polyester
Polyester is a man-made fabric and one of the most common fabrics used for draperies. It has a very affordable price point and is often blended with other yarns to make blended fabrics.  It is strong, crease and stretch resistant, does not absorb water well and is quick to dry.  Polyester is also easy to clean. The only downside to polyester is that it tends to pill if it is rubbed excessively.  Typically drapes are not rubbed  like clothing or furniture.
Acrylic
Acrylic drapery fabric is lightweight and soft. Acrylic, like polyester tends to pill if rubbed excessively.  It  is a great synthetic fabric to blend with a natural fabric like cotton to increase durability. It is stain and sun-resistant  which are qualities not found in natural fibers.  Acrylic fabrics won't  run or fade with washing.
Cotton
Cotton is another very common fabric used in home decor. It is the strongest of the natural fabrics. It comes in various weights, colors and patterns as well as blends. Cotton is easy to clean although it tends to shrink, stretch and wrinkle easily. Cotton is a natural fiber so exposure to sunlight can weaken the fabric. It is not very durable so it is better to select a cotton blend for your draperies.
Silk
Silk is extremely popular for draperies because of the sense of luxury it adds to a room.  There are various types of silk fabrics and most exhibit a luminous glow in many rich colors.  Silk must be lined and interlined.  This not only protects it from the sunlight which will rot the threads, it also adds fullness and richness to the finished look.  You must consider what window you are putting silk onto as the life of the silk will not be as long if you allow the sun to shine on the fabric.  Silk is a natural fabric and will last for many years if kept out of the sun. Silk is prone to water spotting and the price can range from medium to expensive depending on the type of silk.
Linen
Linen, another natural fabric, is light and casual with a fine luster. It is also a very strong fabric and is stain-resistant. Linen also wrinkles easily so if you don't want a real casual look, linen probably isn't for you. Linen can also be stiff and prone to shrinking. Linen may also be prone to sun rot. Linen blends are also available.  Linen can also be very expensive.Check out our webpage for more information

WINDOW COVERING - CHILD AND PET SAFETY

When it comes to choosing window treatments most consumers consider color, style, and even privacy. If young children or pets are around the home, then cord control should be another important factor in selecting your window treatments. It’s not just for young families to be considering this, it’s also Grandparents and people with pets that should keep safety in mind.

Although today's window fashions come with built-in cord-safety features, the Window Covering Safety Council believes cordless window coverings are the best choice for use in children's bedrooms and any area of the home where children spend time playing.

In fact, cordless designs are rapidly gaining favour with consumers and decorators because of their "clean" look and streamlined design. Most traditionally corded window fashions are available in "cordless" styles through the use of spring-loaded mechanisms, battery- or motor-operated lift controls, or simple wand pulls. When combined with the scores of new fashion looks in today's window coverings, consumers can pick from a wide choice of high-style cordless designs.

Hunter Douglas shades are the perfect fit for style and child and pet safety with their LiteRise operating system. This product offers a spring-loaded cordless operation, to raise or lower the blind simply pull or push on the center of the rail.  Hunter Douglas also offers their child and pet safe UltraGlide control lifting system.  This system is a retractable cord that does not get longer, does not form a loop, and is great for those hard to reach windows.

Other pet and child safe products include:

  • Hunter Douglas verticals with the PermAssure Safety Wand, which both tilts and traverses the vanes.
  • Roller Shades with spring plus SoftRise(cordless).
  • Country Woods or other Horizontals with the LiteRise cordless option or the Powertilt motorized option with remote or wall switch.
  • You can also add PoweRise, a motorized option to a number of products as well.
  • With Silhouette, Nantucket, and Pirouette there is free UltraGlide which is a cord that retracts so there are no long cords dangling or continuous loop cord.  You may also purchase the Duette cellular shades with this upgraded cord if the Literise is difficult to reach.
  • The Hunter Douglas Alustra Collection of Duette, Silhouette, Vignette and Woven Textures all come standard with the child safe UltraGlide control.

Design & Demography

Demography can have a large affect on design. Some of the best design is inspired by nature and your surroundings. In Mexico for example you are surrounded by desert and wild colourful flowers and plants. Their interiors very much reflect that having the same warm bold colours and natural textures you find in the rocks and sands.

Frank Lloyd Wright is still to this day deemed as one of the greatest architects of all time. That has a lot to do with his integration of nature and demography with his designs. His Prairie style houses featured extended low buildings with shallow, sloping roofs, clean sky lines, overhangs and terraces all in unfinished materials. These were known as the first open floor plans and were supposed to mirror their surroundings. Windows were put wherever possible and were long and low allowing a connection between the interior and nature outside

 .

Here in southern Alberta we have a great natural pallet to work with. With the large open sky, wheat fields, woods and furs, we have a lot that can inspire our interiors. Use our surroundings to inspire your own interiors by using warm golds, browns and grays. Add pops of color in accents with blues and greens. Try and use woods and stones that are found in your surrounding area, it also cuts down on the cost of importing goods. If you need some guidance tying your design with your demography, Sheila’s Window Toppers & More offers Design Packages to suit all your design needs.

Current Trends In Soft Window Treatments

Draperies are back and these are some of the current trends whether you want full functioning draperies or decorative side panels:

- Velvets are popular for panels and draperies. They add a sense of luxury because of the way the fabric catches the light.
-Sheers are popular in dramatic colors and textures. Many types of sheers are available such as iridescence and printed.
-Longer 6" pleats are popular. Double pleats are the newer trend rather than triple.

-The preferred length of draperies is with a slight break on the floor, much like the way trousers break over a shoe. The look of draperies with a slight puddle on the floor has replaced the extra-long fabric puddle on the floor.
-Very large prints on fabrics or whimsical prints like zebra stripes or giraffe spots are modern and found on many fabrics.
-Rather than swags & valances more attention is being paid to decorative hardware with rods & finials. Rods & finials are being treated like the jewelry for your draperies or panels. You can find rods & finials of metal, wood, glass, crystal and acrylic.

To add drapery panels to your windows, drop by Sheila's in Crowfoot to view the many fabric, rod & finial options. 250 Crowfoot Cres N.W. for all your Window Covering Needs!
